Bayesian MARS
نویسندگان
چکیده
A Bayesian approach to multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS) ®tting (Friedman, 1991) is proposed. This takes the form of a probability distribution over the space of possible MARS models which is explored using reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo methods (Green, 1995). The generated sample of MARS models produced is shown to have good predictive power when averaged and allows easy interpretation of the relative importance of predictors to the overall ®t.

Vision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers
Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...
متن کاملPredicting HiRISE-equivalent Rock Density on Mars Using CTX Image Features
In this paper, a Bayesian framework is used to infer HiRISE-equivalent rock density from CTX image features without needing to explicitly identify rocks. The statistical relationship between HiRISE rock density and CTX image features is modeled using Bayesian Networks. The model is enriched by including geological features—specifically, geomorphic units. The geomorphic units are identified by g...
متن کاملBenchmarking Bayesian neural networks for time series forecasting
We report a benchmarking of neural networks and regression techniques in a time series forecasting task. The estimation errors, computing costs and additional information obtained by Bayesian neural networks are compared with other neural network models and with Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). The Mackey Glass time series in chaotic regime was used to generate the two data sets...
متن کاملScience target assessment for Mars rover instrument deployment
This paper introduces the system being developed at NASA Ames Research Center, intended for the Mars ’09 Smart Lander, to robustly place sensors or tools against rocks in a single communications cycle. Science targets must be assessed prior to instrument placement in order to segment them from the background and determine where, if possible, to position the instrument. An initial result of this...
متن کاملApplication of Neural Network Methodology to the Modelling of the Yield Strength in a Steel Rolling Plate Mill
In this paper, a tree based neural network viz. MARS (Friedman, 1991) for the modelling of the yield strength of a steel rolling plate mill is described. The inputs to the time series model are temperature, strain, strain rate, and interpass time and the output is the corresponding yield stress. It is found that the MARS-based model reveals which variable's functional dependence is nonlinear, a...
